If you’ve ever tried to leave your business telecoms provider and found the process far harder, and far more expensive, than it should be, sadly, you’re not the only one. It’s one of the most common frustrations business owners raise with us, and it’s rarely down to bad luck. More often than not, it’s by design by unscrupulous telecoms providers.

The business telecoms industry has a reputation problem, and it’s one it has largely earned. Long tie-ins punishing exit fees and pricing structures that only start to make sense once you’re already locked in have become so common that many business owners simply accept them as “normal.”

At Yestech ,we don’t think they should be.

The Games Some Providers Play

To be clear, not every provider behaves this way, and we’re not in the business of naming names. (A quick online search quickly reveals news articles and review sites where companies are named and shamed). However, the practices below are common enough that most business owners will recognise at least one of them.

The Vanishing Discount

Many contracts are priced with a large discount for the first year or two, before ramping up from year three onwards. If a client pushes back and challenges their provider at the end of year two, the provider will often agree to another two years of discounted pricing to keep them happy.

But rather than that discount simply covering the two years remaining on the original term, it comes with a brand-new five-year contract attached. The client never actually reaches the end of their agreement; each renegotiation just resets the clock for another five years or more.

The Equipment Trap

Leased hardware can be one of the most expensive parts of a long telecoms contract, and often the least visible. A standard handset that would cost somewhere in the region of £100-150 to buy outright can end up costing well over £1,800 by the time a lengthy lease runs its course.

You’ll be shocked to learn that we’ve heard of leasing deals so protracted and costly that a business could have bought a small car for what they paid for three or four handsets!

Worse still, at the end of the agreement, the equipment usually has to be handed back. You’ve paid for it in full, and you still don’t own it.

The Total Cost That Keeps Climbing

Add pricing creep to equipment costs, out-of-bundle charges and automatic renewal clauses, and the total cost of ownership over a long contract can become extortionately high, far beyond anything discussed at the point of sale.

The Hard Sell

Some providers, and their sales teams, have built a reputation for heavy-handed sales tactics: turning up unannounced, refusing to take no for an answer, and making it difficult for a business owner to simply say “not today” and get on with running their business.

That isn’t partnership. That’s pressure.

Why Yestech Does Things Differently

We’ve built Yestech around the opposite approach. As we’ve said before, see our post on how long a telecoms contract should really be. We don’t believe good service should need to be propped up by restrictive terms. When you choose Yestech as your telecoms partner, you can be confident of transparent pricing from day one, fair contract terms that don’t rely on penalty clauses to keep your custom, and no long tie-ins, because we’d rather earn your business every year than trap you into staying.

If you’re ever unhappy with our service, you’re free to leave without penalty.

If you do business with us, you’ll know exactly what you’re paying and why, from month one through to month sixty and beyond. If you’re ever unhappy with our service, you’re free to leave without penalty.

We think that’s how every telecoms provider should operate and it’s why some of our customers have been with us for almost 20 years.

It’s an approach that’s earned us over 130 five-star reviews, a 90% first-contact resolution rate on customer queries, and an average call answer time of just 25 seconds. We’d rather be judged on figures like those than on how long our contracts run for.

If you’re considering changing your current system, you can also explore Yestech’s flexible cloud phone systems and business telecoms options.

What If You’re Already Locked In?

Of course, none of this helps much if you’re already years into a contract you can’t easily escape. That’s where James Brookbank comes in.

Meet James Brookbank, The Telecoms Advocate

James spent over 20 years in business ownership, energy, telecoms and senior sales leadership before retraining in law, later completing an LLB (Hons) at Royal Holloway, University of London.

That combination, decades inside the industry paired with a legal grounding, is what led him to found The Telecoms Advocate in 2024. His mission is straightforward: to restore balance in a sector where smaller businesses often lack the leverage, expertise or confidence to challenge complex contractual arrangements on equal footing.

James and his team review telecoms agreements, challenge unfair terms, dispute termination charges and resolve billing issues on behalf of businesses that feel they’ve been treated unfairly by their provider, usually starting with a free, no-obligation conversation.

An Important Note

Yestech and The Telecoms Advocate are separate, independent businesses. We’re introducing James because we’ve seen how many businesses are struggling with contracts that were never fair to begin with, and because we believe he’s worth talking to if that sounds like you.

We can’t promise that James will be able to help with your particular contract. Every case is different, and any advice, review or dispute service he provides is agreed directly between you and The Telecoms Advocate, on his terms, not ours.

Yestech does not receive a referral fee nor any financial reward whatsoever from The Telecoms Advocate.

Similarly, The Telecoms Advocate does not receive any financial reward from Yestech for a successful case subsequently joining Yestech. We simply have a joint mutual interest in ensuring ethical and honest practices in the telecoms industry.
